What the Passenger Counts Actually Mean
When you see '108 million passengers' for Atlanta or '92 million' for Dubai, that number is not a head count of unique travelers. Airports report passenger traffic as the total number of passenger movements handled in a calendar year, which means every arrival and every departure is counted separately. A transfer passenger who flies Atlanta to Dallas and then Dallas to Phoenix gets counted twice, once for each flight, because they literally pass through the terminal twice. If 50,000 people walk through the doors in one day, the daily passenger figure is usually closer to 100,000 movements. One Giant Terminal vs Several Small Ones
Huge airports come in two flavors. Atlanta is basically one giant terminal complex: a single building with a string of concourses connected by underground trains, so a transfer rarely means a long walk or a bus ride.
