A gauge chart, also called a dial chart or speedometer chart, displays a single value against a predefined range on a semicircular or circular dial. One needle points at the current value, and the dial is usually divided into colored zones, for example green for healthy, yellow for caution, and red for danger. Because dashboards are full of KPIs, gauges are engineered to be read in a split second: the position of the needle and its color zone answer "are we doing well?" without any mental math.

If you must compare several metrics, a bar chart shows more information per pixel, and data visualization experts often criticize gauges for wasting dashboard space on decoration. A simple number with an up or down arrow, or a horizontal progress bar, conveys the same status more efficiently. For tracking one metric over time, a line chart reveals direction and momentum, which a needle cannot show.

How to Use It Well
  • Define the range up front; the minimum and maximum should have real meaning, such as 0% to 100% of target.
  • Color the bands consistently, for example green in the healthy zone, red in the danger zone, and keep the legend nearby.
