The Basics
A radar chart, also called a spider chart or web chart, displays multivariate data on a two dimensional surface by drawing one axis for each variable. All axes start from the same center point and radiate outward like the spokes of a wheel, and each axis is scaled so the outer edge of the chart represents the maximum value. Values are plotted along their own axis and the points are connected with straight lines to form a polygon, so every row of data becomes one shape.
Because each variable gets its own axis, a radar chart can show many dimensions at once without needing multiple side by side plots. That is its main strength and also its main weakness: when too many variables are crammed in, the web of lines becomes hard to read.

When to Use It vs Alternatives
Reach for a radar chart when you want to compare two to six subjects across the same set of variables and the shape of the polygon tells the story, such as spotting a well rounded profile versus a lopsided one. Keep the number of axes modest; six to eight dimensions is usually the practical ceiling.
For just two or three variables, simple bar charts or scatter plots are clearer. When you need to rank variables by size or compare many categories, horizontal bars beat radar every time, because humans compare lengths far more accurately than angles or areas. If the priority is showing trends over time, use line charts instead. Radar charts show snapshots, not sequences.
How to Read and Use It Well
- Compare the area of each polygon to judge overall strength, and the shape to judge balance between dimensions.
- Keep all axes on the same scale so shapes are directly comparable; rescaling each axis separately can mislead.
- Limit the chart to a handful of series, use high contrast colors, and label the axes clearly.
- Order variables logically around the web, for example by importance or by theme, to make patterns readable.
- Beware of small differences in angle that look bigger than they are; verify claims against the raw numbers.
