Note: What Is a Venn Diagram?
The Basics
A Venn diagram uses overlapping shapes, usually circles, to show the logical relationships between sets. Each circle represents one set, and the region where two or more circles overlap represents the items shared by those sets. The area of each circle is not proportional to the number of items it contains in a classic Venn diagram, so you should read it as a map of set logic rather than a measurement of quantity. It answers questions like which items are in only one set, which are in several, and which belong to none of the listed sets.

- Shared audiences: showing how many customers bought from brand A only, brand B only, or from both.
- Feature overlap: comparing the capabilities of two or three products to see what they share and what is unique.

When to Use It vs Alternatives
Use a Venn diagram when the message is about relationships between sets, especially with two or three sets, and when a quick conceptual picture matters more than exact counts. It is one of the fastest ways to communicate "both," "only one," and "neither" at a glance.
Choose a different visual when numbers matter. If you need to compare actual sizes quantitatively, an overlapping bar chart, a proportional bubble chart, an Euler diagram with sized regions, or an upset plot handles precise values better than a classic Venn diagram. With four or more sets, overlapping circles become unreadable, and an upset plot or matrix is the standard alternative. If the sets simply do not overlap at all, a plain bar chart or table may be all you need.
How to Read and Build It Well
- Read each region independently: the left of circle A, the right of circle B, the middle overlap, and the space outside both.
- Label every region explicitly, including "none," so the diagram cannot be misinterpreted.
- Keep to two or three sets in a standard circle layout; more sets demand a specialized design.
- Make overlapping areas visually distinct with color, and keep circle sizes roughly equal unless the chart is an Euler variant with real proportions.
- Place the shared items in the exact overlap, never in a single circle, or the logic of the diagram breaks.
- Use it early in analysis for thinking, then switch to numeric charts for the final quantitative report.
