What It Is
A timeline is a visual arrangement of events in chronological order along a linear axis, typically running left to right, top to bottom, or along a vertical spine. Each event is a marker with a date or time label, and the sequence of markers tells the story of what happened, when it happened, and what came after. The gaps between markers convey the passage of time, while the markers themselves focus attention on milestones rather than on continuous measurements.
Timelines are not quantity charts. Where a line chart measures how much something changed over time, a timeline answers the question "what happened next?" That makes timelines the natural format for histories, roadmaps, and any narrative built from dated events. They can span seconds or centuries: a project launch sequence, a family genealogy, a biography, and a geological era chart all use the same underlying idea of ordering events in time.

When to Use It vs Alternatives
Use a timeline when the primary message is the order and timing of discrete events. If the goal is to show how a numeric quantity changes over time, a line or area chart serves better. If the goal is to count how many events fall into each period, a histogram or bar chart by year is more informative. A timeline shines when the events themselves are the data, and a trend chart shines when the measurements are the data. For project scheduling with durations, a Gantt chart is the specialized relative of the timeline.
How to Use It Well
- Keep labels short and consistent so the sequence can be scanned quickly
- Use a consistent time scale so visual gaps honestly reflect real gaps
- Put the headline milestones on the main line and supporting details in notes or tooltips
- Color-code categories, such as launches versus fixes, to reveal patterns in the sequence
- Show exact dates in labels or tooltips, not just relative positions
- Limit what fits on one screen to about five to seven events, and split long histories into phases
- Choose orientation by content: left to right for short spans, vertical for dense or scrolling lists
