A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart used for project scheduling. Each task in a project gets its own row, and a horizontal bar spans the calendar dates when that task is planned to run. The chart shows task start and end dates, durations, overlaps, milestones, and often which tasks depend on which, all on a shared timeline.

Gantt charts are the standard planning view in project management software like Microsoft Project, Jira, and Asana, because they compress an entire schedule into one glanceable timeline.

Gantt vs Alternatives

Use a Gantt chart when time and task ordering are the core of the story. If you simply want to compare task durations without a calendar, a plain bar chart works. For task dependencies presented as a network, a PERT or network diagram is better suited, since it centers on relationships rather than dates. For team capacity by day, a resource calendar or timeline view may be clearer. Gantt charts assume a somewhat linear project plan; highly iterative workflows sometimes outgrow them.

How to Use It Well
  • Group tasks by phase or workstream and color code them
  • Draw dependency arrows or connectors between predecessor and successor tasks
  • Show milestones as distinct markers, often diamonds, not bars
  • Keep the timeline readable by limiting the visible date range to the relevant period
  • Use shading or a progress bar inside each task bar to show percent complete
  • Review the critical path to see which delays ripple through the whole project

A well-built Gantt chart turns a long, complex schedule into a single page that a whole team can read together, which is why it remains a fixture of project management decades after its invention.
