Maglev vs. Wheel-on-Rail
- The chart splits the field into two camps: Maglev and Conventional. Maglev trains (like the Shanghai Maglev) float above the track using magnets, so they have no wheels touching the rail — no physical contact means no wheel friction and less wear.
- Wheel-on-rail trains (CR400, ICE 3, Shinkansen, TGV and the rest) roll along steel rails on steel wheels. They've been perfected for over a century and are now extremely reliable and cheap per kilometer to run.
- Because maglev tracks are expensive to build and incompatible with existing rail networks, maglev trains are rare — the Shanghai Maglev is effectively the world's only commercial high-speed example. That's why 14 of the 15 trains here are conventional.

How Maglev Actually Works
- Maglev is short for magnetic levitation. Powerful electromagnets in the guideway and on the train repel each other to lift the vehicle a few centimeters off the track.
- Without wheels or physical contact, air resistance becomes the main drag, so maglev trains can reach extremely high speeds with less energy and almost no mechanical wear.
- The Shanghai Maglev also uses electromagnetic propulsion to push the train forward along its 30 km track — no engine driving wheels, just magnetic push.
