Eight planets orbit our Sun, and no two are alike. The chart above lines them up by equatorial diameter — from Mercury at 4,879 km up to Jupiter at 142,984 km — and that single ranking tells a surprisingly complete story about how the solar system works. Once you understand the sizes, you understand a lot about each planet's gravity, its atmosphere, and even its history.

Two Families of Planets

Astronomers group the eight planets into two broad families based on what they are made of:

  • Terrestrial (rocky) planets — Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. They have solid, rocky surfaces sitting on a metallic core, and they are all comparatively small and dense.
  • Gas giants — Jupiter and Saturn. These are huge spheres of mostly hydrogen and helium. They have no solid surface at all; the colourful "surface" you see is just the top of a very deep atmosphere.
  • Ice giants — Uranus and Neptune. Slightly smaller than the gas giants, they are built from water, methane and ammonia ices layered over a rocky core, which gives them their cool blue appearance.
The Size Range Is Extreme
  • Jupiter is the largest planet, about 142,984 km across — roughly 11 Earths would fit side by side across its equator.
  • By volume, around 1,300 Earths could fit inside Jupiter. It is the undisputed giant of the solar system, with no close second.
  • Mercury is the smallest planet at 4,879 km — its diameter is barely a third of Earth's 12,756 km.
  • Size is not exclusive to planets: Ganymede, the largest moon in the solar system, spans about 5,268 km — actually wider than Mercury, with Saturn's moon Titan close behind.
  • Earth is the largest rocky planet, just beating Venus (12,104 km), which is often called Earth's "twin" because of their similar size and mass.
  • Saturn is the second-largest planet (120,536 km) yet the least dense — its average density is lower than water's, so it would float in a big enough bathtub.
Why Size Shapes a Planet

Diameter is not just a number; it drives almost everything else about a planet:

  • Bigger planet, stronger gravity. Jupiter's surface gravity is about 2.5 times Earth's, so you would weigh roughly two and a half times more there.
  • Stronger gravity also means a stronger grip on atmosphere. The giants hold on to light hydrogen and helium, while small Mercury, with its weak gravity, lost almost all of its atmosphere long ago.
  • That is why the giants are giant: in the cold outer solar system there was plenty of frozen gas and ice to sweep up, so Jupiter and its neighbours grew enormous while the rocky inner worlds stayed compact.
Orbits and Distances
  • The four inner planets crowd close to the Sun: Mercury at 0.39 AU, Venus at 0.72 AU, Earth at 1.00 AU and Mars at 1.52 AU. An AU (astronomical unit) is the average Earth–Sun distance, about 150 million km.
  • The outer planets spread much wider: Jupiter at 5.20 AU, Saturn at 9.54 AU, Uranus at 19.19 AU and Neptune at 30.07 AU.
  • Between Mars and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt — a band of rocky leftovers that never clumped into a planet, and a reminder of the huge gap in distances between the inner and outer families.
  • Distance controls pace: Mercury races around the Sun in just 88 Earth days, while Neptune takes nearly 165 Earth years for a single orbit.
  • All eight planets orbit in the same direction and roughly the same flat plane (the ecliptic) — a frozen echo of the spinning disk of gas and dust that formed the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.
Fun Facts
  • Venus is the hottest planet even though it is not the closest to the Sun. Its thick carbon dioxide atmosphere traps heat in a runaway greenhouse effect, pushing surface temperatures to about 465°C.
  • Mercury swings between extremes: with almost no atmosphere to hold heat, its sunlit side can reach about 430°C while the night side plunges to roughly -170°C.
  • Mars hosts Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano in the solar system — about 22 km high, roughly two and a half times the height of Mount Everest.
  • Jupiter's Great Red Spot is a storm larger than Earth that has been raging for at least a century and a half.
  • Saturn's rings are made of countless chunks of ice and rock, from dust grains up to house-sized boulders.
  • Uranus rolls around the Sun on its side, tilted about 98 degrees, so each of its seasons lasts more than 20 Earth years.
  • Neptune has the strongest winds measured in the solar system — gusts exceeding 2,000 km/h.
  • Pluto was demoted from planet to dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union in 2006 because it has not cleared its orbit of other objects — it is still out there, smaller than our Moon.
  • The Sun holds about 99.86% of all the mass in the solar system; all eight planets combined are just a rounding error by comparison.

Next time you look at the chart, keep the scale in mind: the four inner planets squeeze into less than 2 AU of space, while the outer four stretch out past 30 AU. Diameter may be the easiest number to compare, but it is really measuring vastly different worlds — compact rocky balls close to the Sun, and deep, atmosphere-shrouded giants far beyond the asteroid belt.
