How the PowerIndex Works
Global Firepower's PowerIndex ranks the conventional fighting capability of the world's militaries. The scoring is inverted: a lower score means a stronger military, with 0.0000 representing a perfect, unattainable score. The index weighs more than 60 factors, including manpower, equipment, geography, logistics, natural resources and financial strength, to build a single comparable figure for each nation.
The Big Three
- United States: 0.0741, the best score in the world.
- Russia: 0.0791, a close second.
- China: 0.0919, third and the only other nation below 0.10.
The gap between the US and Russia is just 0.005 on the index, but in absolute terms the US holds enormous advantages in naval tonnage, strategic airlift and global basing. The top three are separated from 4th place India by a wide margin, underscoring how much firepower the leading powers concentrate.
The Top 10
India (0.1346) is the clear leader of the second tier, followed by South Korea (0.1642), France (0.1798), Japan (0.1876) and the United Kingdom (0.1881). Turkiye (0.1975) takes 9th and Italy (0.2211) 10th. Notably, Japan and the UK are separated by less than 0.001, making the 7th and 8th spots effectively a tie on this index.
Rising Powers and Regional Leaders
Brazil (0.2374) and Germany (0.2463) anchor the next band, followed by Indonesia (0.2582), Pakistan (0.2626) and Israel (0.2707). Iran (0.3199), Australia (0.3208) and Spain (0.3247) come next, with Egypt (0.3651) and Ukraine (0.3691) completing the top 20. Pakistan and Israel both rank highly for their regions despite relatively small populations, reflecting heavy defense spending and large standing forces.
What the Index Does Not Measure
The PowerIndex is a conventional-warfare ranking. It does not capture nuclear arsenals, which is why nuclear powers like the UK and France do not rank higher, and it cannot measure leadership quality, training, morale, or combat experience. Ukraine's 20th-place score, for example, says nothing about the effectiveness its forces have shown fighting a defensive war against a much larger neighbor.
