What Is a Main Battle Tank?

A main battle tank (MBT) is a heavily armored, tracked fighting vehicle armed with a large-caliber cannon, typically 105 to 125 mm, that combines the mobility of a light tank with the firepower and protection of a heavy tank. Since the concept was perfected in the 1960s and 1970s, the MBT has been the backbone of every modern army's ground combat power. Quantity vs Quality

Numbers alone do not decide battles. A 1960s-era T-55 and a modern K2 Black Panther are both counted as "tanks" on paper, but they belong to different technological centuries. The war in Ukraine has demonstrated that tanks still matter enormously, but they are vulnerable without infantry support, electronic warfare, and protection from drones and anti-tank missiles. Analysts therefore read fleet sizes alongside modernization rates, training levels, logistics, and air power when judging the real military balance between nations.
