Two Geniuses, Two Currents

Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla are two of history's most famous inventors, and their feud helped wire the modern world. Edison (1847 to 1931) built the first practical electric lighting system on direct current (DC), opening his first power station in New York in 1882. Tesla (1856 to 1943), who had briefly worked for Edison in 1884, believed the future belonged to alternating current (AC), which could be transformed to higher voltages and sent over long distances. By the late 1880s Tesla's AC system, backed and promoted by George Westinghouse, was spreading fast, and Edison fought it with everything he had. The result became known as the War of the Currents.

How the War Was Fought
  • Edison's DC system was simple but weak: DC could only travel short distances before losing power, forcing small generators to be built close to customers.
  • AC used transformers to step voltage up for transmission and back down for home use, so one big power plant could serve an entire city.

Why AC Won

AC won because physics was on its side. Electric power loses energy as heat while traveling, and the loss depends on current, so high voltage with low current travels far better than low voltage with high current. AC made it easy to transform voltage up for travel and back down for use, while the DC of that era could not be transformed at all. One large AC plant could feed a whole region cheaply, while a DC system needed a generator every few blocks. By the early 1890s even Edison's own company was adding AC, and when it merged with Westinghouse's rival Thomson-Houston in 1892 to form General Electric, the war was effectively over.

DC's Modern Comeback
  • DC never really died: batteries, solar panels and electronics all run on DC, so it lives inside your phone, laptop and electric car.
  • Phone chargers, USB-C and computer power supplies convert household AC into DC internally, because every chip needs it.
  • High-voltage DC lines now win for very long distances and undersea cables, where DC can actually beat AC on losses.
