One species rules the sky
Take a look at the chart above and one pattern jumps out: nearly every tree on the list is the same species. Seven of the ten tallest trees ever measured are coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), and they aren't just winning — they're winning by a lot. Number one, Hyperion, soars to about 115.92 metres, while the tallest non-redwood on the list, a Tasmanian mountain ash, only reaches about 100.5 metres. Coast redwoods grow along a narrow belt of California's coast, where cool, foggy air keeps them moist and mild weather means they can keep growing almost year-round. The fog isn't just a comfort; redwoods actually drink water straight from the mist through their leaves when roots can't keep up.
How do we even measure a tree that tall?
You can't exactly climb a 116-metre redwood with a tape measure. Instead, scientists use a few clever tricks. The simplest is a clinometer, an instrument that measures the angle from your eye to the top of the tree; combine that angle with your distance and a little trigonometry and you get a height. More precise work uses laser rangefinders that bounce a beam off the crown, and the gold standard today is ground-based lidar, which builds a detailed 3D picture of the whole tree and lets researchers measure it remotely. Because trees sway and canopies get dense, officially "verified" heights demand rigorous, repeatable measurements — which is why a casual guess and a spot on a list are very different things. Hyperion's height, discovered in 2006 by naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor, took careful measurement to confirm.
Why trees can't just keep growing forever
If soil and sunshine were all that mattered, trees might grow to absurd heights. They can't, mostly because of water. Trees pull water up from their roots to their leaves through tiny vessels called xylem. That water travels thanks to evaporation at the leaves plus the pull of gravity-defying water tension, and the taller a tree gets, the harder it becomes to haul water all the way to the crown. Beyond a certain height — somewhere around 120 to 130 metres for most species — the water column effectively runs out of pulling power, drought stress rises, and the tree simply can't add much more height. Scientists call this the "hydraulic limitation" hypothesis, and it's the main reason there's a practical ceiling to tree height. Hyperion at 115.92 m is right up against that physical limit.
Not all giants are redwoods

- South-east Asia and Australia host their own giants, but they rarely break into the redwoods' territory.
