Skyscrapers are more than just towers of glass and steel — they are feats of engineering, economics and ambition. Here's a friendly guide to how the world's tallest buildings are measured, built and ranked, plus what the numbers on this page really mean.

How "tallest" is actually measured
  • Architectural height is the standard used for this list. It counts the height of the building from the ground up to the top of its structural or architectural elements, including spires but excluding antennas.
  • This is why Burj Khalifa tops the ranking at 828 m: its massive spire counts fully — and it has no antenna to argue about.
  • But an antenna is treated differently from a spire. A spire is considered an integral part of the design, so it counts toward architectural height. A bolted-on antenna, mast or flagpole does not.
  • That rule famously demotes the antenna-topped One World Trade Center in New York, whose spire keeps it a genuine 541 m, while other towers get measured "to the roof."
  • The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is the body that defines these rules and keeps the official ranking.
Supertall vs. megatall — a quick vocabulary lesson
  • A supertall is any building at least 300 m tall — still a fairly exclusive club.
  • A megatall is any building at least 600 m tall — an elite group of only a handful worldwide.
  • On this page, everything from the #1 Burj Khalifa (828 m) down to around #4 Abraj Al-Bait (601 m) qualifies as megatall, and all ten entries are comfortably supertall.
  • There are also "occupied height" (the highest story with usable floor space) and "structural height" (top of the concrete, steel or glass structure) — both are usually shorter than architectural height.
The engineering that makes them possible
  • Wind is the real enemy, not gravity. At 600 m up, wind blows far harder, so towers use tuned mass dampers — a giant counterweight that swings to absorb sway and stop the building from feeling like jelly in a storm.
  • Shanghai Tower's twisting shape isn't just pretty: the 120-degree rotation of its facade reduces wind loads by around 25%, saving steel and concrete.
  • Foundations are massive. Burj Khalifa, for example, sits on a reinforced concrete foundation that weighs in the hundreds of thousands of tonnes, spread over a broad base to resist uplift and settling (and explain its concrete "stump" base structure).
  • Elevators are a science of their own. Shanghai Tower's cabs climb at 20 m/s (over 70 km/h) using double-deck cars and KONE "UltaRope" carbon-fiber cables to cope with the height.
  • Slender towers are built from high-strength concrete and steel cores that handle the "point load" of the huge weight pressing down through the center of the tower.
Why build so high in the first place?
  • Land in city centers like Dubai, Shenzhen and Shanghai is scarce and expensive — going up packs more floor space onto a tiny plot, which is the whole point.
  • Tall towers double as prestige: a record-height building becomes a city's, and a nation's, calling card and a magnet for tourism and investment.
  • Backers often get practical returns, too — prime office and hotel space at unprecedented and iconic locations.
