What exactly is an ocean trench?
An ocean trench is a long, narrow, V-shaped depression carved into the deep-sea floor. Trenches are the deepest places on Earth, and almost all of them sit at the margins of the Pacific Ocean, where they form the famous "Pacific Ring of Fire." They are not just random holes in the seabed — they are geological features produced by one of the most powerful processes on the planet.
How do trenches form?
Trenches are born through a process called subduction. Earth's outer shell is divided into huge moving slabs called tectonic plates. When a heavy oceanic plate collides with a lighter continental plate, the denser oceanic plate dives (subducts) beneath it and sinks deep into the mantle. The trench is the surface scar left where that plate begins its plunge. As the slab descends, it melts, feeding volcanic arcs and triggering frequent earthquakes — which is why so many trenches sit beside chains of volcanoes.

The crushing pressure
The deeper you go, the more the weight of the overlying water presses down. At Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench, pressure reaches about 1,000 bar — roughly the weight of a small car pressing on every square centimeter. No ordinary deep-sea submarine can survive that kind of squeeze; only specially hardened submersibles are built to go down that far.
Is life possible down there?
Absolutely. Despite total darkness, freezing cold, and enormous pressure, the trenches teem with life. Alongside the familiar crustaceans and worms you'll find strange creatures called amphipods, snailfish that thrive at extreme depths, and soft-bodied animals barely held together by the crushing pressure. Their bodies rely on special proteins and molecules called osmolytes to keep working under conditions that would crush most organisms. Microbes even live in the sediment, slowly consuming the organic matter that drifts down from above.
How do we measure them?
Measuring a trench's depth is no simple task. For most of history, scientists relied on echosounding — bouncing a sound pulse off the seabed and timing how long the echo takes to return. Modern expeditions combine this with GPS and a technique called multibeam sonar to map the seafloor in detail. Only a handful of human-crewed vehicles have ever visited the very bottom: the bathyscaphe Trieste in 1960 and James Cameron's Deepsea Challenger in 2012 are among the famous ones. Even the exact "official" depth of the deepest spot is debated because each new survey returns a slightly different number.
